We make space for music, art and culture that mainstream institutions rarely teach, so it can be celebrated, shared and passed on.
The Untaught is a not-for-profit (soon to be a community interest company) for people whose cultures don't often get a stage in UK music and arts.
That includes diaspora and global majority communities, LGBTQ+ people, and everyone who comes along to listen, dance, eat and take part.
We're starting close to home, with Indonesian and Southeast Asian diaspora culture in London and around. Over time we want to open the doors to more communities.
More visibility for cultures and artists that rarely make it onto mainstream stages, and real, paid opportunities for the people behind them. Welcoming spaces where you can reconnect with your heritage, meet others, and find belonging. Traditions shared with new audiences, and practical support when our communities are hit by crises like the Kalimantan fires.
In Indonesian, jalan jalan means going for a walk, out for a wander. Ours is a night of Indonesian and Southeast Asian culture in London: gamelan and dance, DJs, food, and a market full of small traders.

Our second edition is a fundraiser for grassroots groups responding to the fires in Kalimantan. Snacks and a vendor market, traditional dance, live gamelan, and a talk on Kalimantan's forests with a conservation author. From 9pm the DJs take over with Indonesian pop, disco, dangdut and breaks.
